FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions with John Kong

WHAT’S WITH THE ‘BIG EYE’ AND ‘LITTLE EYE’?
The beauty in Creation is that no eye is created equal. We here at BELE like to explore the ‘What?’ and the ‘Huh?’ moments of expression. Sometimes it takes one big eye next to a little one to quickly narrate that situation. Besides, it’s funny. Being normal is so overrated!

The big eye little eye has been used by many artists over time. I wish I was the genius who first started it but I wasn't. I just chose to use it as my signature style to help 'complete' my overall visual look.

CAN YOU AT LEAST PUT IN AN EYE PUPIL FOR ME?
Sorry. We do not believe in compromising our artistic vision but in the near future we will be making available pupil/eye stickers of all different colors where you can compromise our artistic integrity for us!

WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR ‘EYE-DEAS’ FROM?
Haha. I thought that was a funny play on words. Ideas-Eyedeas…maybe it’s just me. Ok, it really is just me. I pay attention to everything in life. Sometimes politics, news, movies, Faith, friends and family all play a role. What’s important is that you open up yourself to see humor in everyday life…even in the mundane simple things. Laugh at the odd things people do, not at who they are.

CAN YOU DRAW US IN YOUR STYLE?

It’s all about the fans! Definitely we would not be here without you, the fans, so we’ll try our best to accommodate all of you with the time we have allotted at our convention/event schedules. But please keep in mind that we stay pretty busy on location. Common courtesy is always a great way to start.

DO YOU FREELANCE?
We’re always on the lookout for new fun and creative freelance projects if it fits within our already packed schedule. Drop an email to: jkong@fucious.com and we can further discuss rates and terms. If we’re unable to fit you in our schedule, we have many other artist friends who may be able to fulfill your art needs.

I HAVE AN IDEA FOR A COMIC STRIP FOR YOU. DO YOU WANT TO HEAR ABOUT IT?

Unfortunately for legal reasons, we do not accept unsolicited artwork/writing submissions at this time. There’s a whole mess of reasons as to why so let’s just keep it simple and not go there. But slap that idea on paper with a couple captions and interactive stickmen and soon you’ll have your own comic strips to promote!

I WANT TO BE AN ARTIST. WHERE DO I START? WHERE DO I GO TO SCHOOL TO DO WHAT YOU DO?

It’s always a blessing to love what you do; to wander around in your imagination and have others appreciate it. Find a school whose expertise is in the area of your interest. Not every school is created equal. I like to recommend the school where all you focus on is the art world. There, you learn to appreciate those who have come before you and partner up with those who will rock the art world with you. Be passionate about what you do. Seek out online art communities and find their recommendations as well. I like wandering at awn.com, conceptart.org, cgtalk.com, etc. If you get really confused about your decision, drop me an email and I’ll try to point you in the right direction.

WHERE DID YOU GO TO SCHOOL?
Columbus College of Art and Design. I studied Time Based Media with a focus on traditional animation and took additional courses in Illustration.

WHAT TYPE OF PROGRAMS/SOFTWARE DO YOU USE?

I’ve converted over to an all digital workflow although I still doodle with the almighty pen and pencil from time to time. I mainly sketch in Alias Sketchbook Pro and Adobe Photoshop. I do most of the coloring in Photoshop. I’ve retired my Wacom tablet and upgraded to the Wacom Cintiq which is a must have for any serious artist. I also have an ASUS R1E tablet laptop that I use for drawing and demos on location.

IS THERE ANYTHING WE CAN DO TO HELP?

We believe in the power of prayer so keep us in yours. And definitely tell all your buddies about who we are and what we’re doing. We honestly believe in winning one fan at a time into our BELE world and can only go as far as where you, the fans, take us. Most importantly, swing by our booths/tables the next time we’re in your neck of the woods and tell us who you are. Join the updates so you’ll be first to know of everything we’ve been planning here at BigEyeLittleEye.com.

I DON’T REALLY LIKE WHAT YOU’RE DOING! WHERE DO I COMPLAIN?
Don’t worry! We totally understand that not everyone is going to ‘get’ our humor. Feel free to be angry and voice your opinion! We’ve even made it easy for you. Click: hatemail@bigeyelittleeye.com. Yes, we'll read it and then laugh!
